SPIRIT DOLLS

Tracy combines her love of nature, found objects, crystals, spirituality, essential oils, words, solar dyeing and more to create these one-of-a-kind spirit dolls. Each doll starts with a person or an idea in mind and then the magic begins. From the branches to the individually hand-sculpted faces, from the fabric to the embellishments, each doll is co-created with Spirit, intuition and intention. The fabrics are either thrifted or solar-dyed using foraged seasonal plants or plant extracts and the wool is sourced from my friend Robin's sheep and her own natural plant dyes. Each doll holds special, personal blessings for it's recipient. Here are a few samples that have been made so far.

Serenity
This is the very first doll that I made for myself. Intentions of peace, calm, serenity, wisdom were some of the blessings that were written on strips and a crystal was tucked inside. The outer layers of fabric were either dyed by Robin (who taught me how to solar dye) or were my first attempts at solar-dyeing. An amethyst and clear quartz necklace was crafted to symbolize my love of crystals, a heart leaf for my love of hearts, feathers for wings and purple for my love of the colour. The face was purchased from Lyn Belisle.

Meadowlily
This was the first doll intentionally created for a friend. She is a forest therapy guide who loves to walk the Meadowlily Woods. I collected the branches and greenery from the invitations offered on one of her practice forest therapy sessions and used colours, blessings and crystals that reflected her spirit. The face was purchased from Lyn Belisle and the fabrics are a combination of thrifted and solar-dyed. The hair is plant-dyed and sourced from my friend Robin's sheep.

Wise Crone
That is not actually what my friend named this doll but that is the Spirit that I feel when I think of her. This friend is a medium, healer, lives a holistic, plant-based lifestyle and is a vast source of wisdom. Her doll especially had a very distinct vision of how she wanted to be made. All fabrics I solar-dyed and I gave her a moonstone necklace to reflect her love of crystals. In her little pocket are herbs that she grew and made into smudge. She also wears essentials oils as this friend is an Aromatherapist. The face was one of my first attempts at sculpting with air-dry clay.

Hippie Spirit
Again, not what she was actually named but that was the intention behind her creation. This friend loves bell-bottoms and so I figured out her to make them for a Spirit Doll using thrifted fabric. The tie-dye I created myself from a workshop I did a few years ago and the other fabric I solar-dyed. She is a crystal lover as well so I gave her a Herkimer diamond necklace. The face I sculpted and painted and the hair is from Robin's sheep.

Morrighid
This Spirit Doll was a special request for Gomer. He wanted a Goddess that held the energies of both Morrigan and Brighid, with blues, purples and greens, his sword letter opener and an amethyst. I also included a staff and crow feathers for his love of ravens and crows. She is wrapped in special blessings inside and exudes a powerful energy when you're in her presence. Her clothes were dyed by me and Robin. She's also the first to be set on a wood pedestal.
Nature Goddess
This Spirit Doll started with the intention of using the red, orange and yellow fabrics that were dyed using plant extracts that I received as a gift from Gomer for Christmas. I loved how they looked together. I also wanted to combine them with the white floral fabric that I found at a thrift store. I wanted her to have a bit of a Brighid influence, hence the fiery nature but also a Spring feel as well. The greenery came from a floral arrangement I received for my 50th birthday. Her face was my very first attempt at sculpting faces and her base was gifted from a local woodworker. I love how her hair mirrors the colours of her clothing.

Angelic
This Spirit Doll was just for play. I wanted to use white and I wanted to use this particular fabric that I found at a thrift store. Her crown was found on a walk in my neighbourhood and her clear quartz crystal enhances her inner vision to the angelic realm. The wool is by Robin and the duck feather was found on a local beekeeper's farm.

Wild One
For this doll I was given a list of possible ideas/themes and the wild nature was what intuitively felt right for the recipient. They wanted a deer-like face with natural colours and a "wild" spirit. I just love how it turned out! Wool hair, a birch bark harness, crystals, stones, a feather and solar dyed fabric are just some of the materials used in its construction.

Faerie Spirit
My first faerie! This doll was crafted for a lover of the fae its recipient has a very joyful, colourful energy. She asked for the wood piece to be included, which turned into a pendant and other than that it was up to my intuition to create. She and I had taken a foraging workshop and that's where I found the Dryad's Saddle mushroom. And a maple key tutu was just perfect for someone who loves skirts. The fabrics were solar dyed and eco-printed and this doll also includes crystals, sheep curl hair and wings made from Angelina fiber.

Healer, Drummer, Birder
This doll practically made herself! I think it's the quickest I've ever made a doll, the energy and intuition was that strong. The recipient is a birder, nature lover, drummer and healer so I knew all of those elements would be represented. The feathers on the back were found from her property. The feather overskirt (ribbon) was found at a local fabric store and the clothing is eco-printed by me. The drum is the star and was made with help from my husband (cutting the wood) and Youtube for how to make a drum. She also includes a blue tiger's eye pendant and a thrifted bird on a stone perch.
